Lauren Brook, Chief Executive of Greener Kirkcaldy, leads a community-focused charity in Fife that champions environmental sustainability and community well-being. With over a decade of positive impact in areas such as food security, energy efficiency, and community engagement, Greener Kirkcaldy has grown into a vital resource for the local area.
Lauren credits Just Enterprise’s leadership programmes with not only transforming her own personal development but also enhancing the culture and capacity of the entire organisation.
Lauren’s leadership journey began with the Aspiring Leaders programme. “At the time, I didn’t see myself as a leader,” Lauren admits. “I had started managing volunteers, but I felt I lacked the confidence and skills to fully embrace leadership.” Encouraged by her then-chief executive, Lauren joined the programme, seeking tools to grow into her role and connect with peers navigating similar challenges in the social enterprise sector.
The experience was life-changing. “The Aspiring Leaders programme gave me a foundation to build my skills, particularly in confidence, decision-making, and communication. It wasn’t just about learning leadership theory – it was about understanding myself and discovering how I could lead authentically,” she recalls.
Lauren’s development continued when she returned from maternity leave and transitioned into a senior leadership role. “The Senior Leaders programme came at the perfect time,” she says. “It was a critical opportunity to reflect, develop my approach, and gain practical tools for leading effectively at a higher level. It gave me the confidence to step into the role of Chief Executive.”
Building a Leadership Culture at Greener Kirkcaldy
The benefits of the Just Enterprise programmes extended far beyond Lauren’s personal growth. Over the years, more than 15 members of the Greener Kirkcaldy team have participated in the Aspiring Leaders and Senior Leaders programmes. “These programmes have been instrumental in shaping our organisational culture,” says Lauren.
Lauren highlights several key changes:
- Improved Communication and Collaboration: “We’re now better at encouraging staff to share ideas and feedback openly. This has created stronger connections between the leadership team and staff.”
- Enhanced Employee Well-being: “Staff feel more valued, listened to, and empowered. This has improved morale and well-being across the organisation.”
- A Growth Mindset: “The programmes encouraged us to embrace innovation and not be afraid of failure. This shift has helped us trial new ideas and stay adaptable in a challenging sector.”
By fostering leadership at all levels, Greener Kirkcaldy has created a team where staff confidently lead projects, manage volunteers, and drive initiatives forward. “It’s not just about individual development. These programmes have created a ripple effect, making us a stronger and more agile organisation overall,” Lauren explains.
Tailored Support for Organisational Development
In addition to leadership training, Greener Kirkcaldy has benefited from a range of other support offered by Just Enterprise. Staff members have participated in sustainability-focused programmes and one-to-one coaching, and the organisation has received expert guidance on business planning.
“One of the standout moments for us was the tailored support we received for our social enterprise bike shop,” Lauren shares. “Just Enterprise helped us develop a robust business plan, which has been critical in ensuring its success and sustainability.”
Transformational Leadership Training
Lauren describes the Just Enterprise leadership programmes as unique in their structure and impact. “It’s the best training I’ve ever done,” she says. “The balance between theory, practical tools, and time for reflection is perfect. The programmes are highly interactive and participant-led, creating an environment where you feel genuinely supported by trainers who understand the sector.”
The benefits of these programmes are long-lasting. Lauren highlights the value of building connections with peers in the sector. “I still keep in touch with people from both of my courses. They’ve become a trusted network I can turn to for advice and support,” she says. The accreditation available at the end of the programmes also provided additional value, allowing participants to consolidate their learning and apply it in meaningful ways.
Lauren’s Advice to Others in the Sector
Having experienced the benefits first-hand, Lauren is a passionate advocate for Just Enterprise’s leadership programmes. “I tell everyone I know in the sector to take part,” she says. “It’s a transformative experience. Unlike many other training courses, where you leave feeling that your time could have been spent better elsewhere, these programmes leave you energised, equipped, and excited to implement what you’ve learned.”
For Lauren, the true measure of the programme’s success is its impact on both individuals and organisations. “It’s helped me become a more confident, empathetic, and authentic leader. And it’s had a tangible impact on Greener Kirkcaldy, enabling us to grow, innovate, and thrive.”
Key Outcomes for Greener Kirkcaldy:
- Strengthened leadership confidence across the team.
- A more collaborative and innovative organisational culture.
- Tangible support for strategic projects, including business planning for their bike shop initiative.
- A stronger focus on staff well-being and development.
