As a social entrepreneur, you have certain statutory responsibilities to maintain accounting records and prepare accounts. You will also be required to prepare financial projections for funders as you set up and grow your business. Having enough cash can be the difference between survival and failure, so understanding how to manage your cashflow is key to being successful.
These sessions are designed to unpack the world of finance. They will help you to understand the benefits of making friends with finance (and your numbers) and assist you with the practical steps to do this.
You can attend one or both workshops, as preferred.
10.30pm – 12.30pm – Cash Flow Management
The morning session around Cashflow planning will be delivered by Brian McMillan, a Just Enterprise Advisor with over 30 years’ Start Up experience after running his own business.
1.30pm – 3.30pm – Understanding and maintaining accounting records
The afternoon session about accounting records will be delivered by Sheila Fazal, a qualified Chartered Accountant, with over 35 years of experience of providing professional advice and assurance services, now specialising in supporting Social Enterprises and small charities through her own social enterprise – Social Enterprise Accountancy Scotland CIC.
Sheila offers year end accounting, tax and payroll services to social enterprises (predominantly CICs) and small charities. Using previous and ongoing board and business experience, she provides training and coaching on all areas of finance and governance, using the principles of Action Learning.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the sessions, you will have:
- An appreciation of the benefit of cashflow planning as a management tool and not just a task to complete for a funding application.

- Shared experiences and gaining practical hints and tips to help avoid common pitfalls.

‘Such a valuable session. I’ve attended a number of finance workshop as it is definitely my weakness, but this was by far the most useful. It wasn’t daunting, it wasn’t dry and real -life challenges were met with simple answers/advice.’
