Social enterprises come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in cities, towns and villages across Scotland. Some might be taking their first tentative steps having identified a need in their community, while others are well-established but seeking fresh ideas, new income streams or ways to adapt to changing circumstances.
What they all share is a commitment to delivering products or services that make a difference while remaining financially sustainable.
The Just Enterprise programme exists to give them the best chance of succeeding in this mission and has worked with thousands of organisations over 14 years to help do just that.
In addition to business skills workshops, e-learning and leadership programmes, we also offer one-to-one business support designed for the realities of running a mission-led enterprise. The advice is practical, personal and rooted in an understanding of how purpose and profit work together.
What’s more, Scottish Government funding means that you can access this personalised support at no cost to you or your organisation.
Support that Fits Your Needs
Every support assignment begins with understanding your aims, your challenges and the community or market you serve. From there, you work with one or more of our business advisers who will help you focus on what matters most, whether that is preparing to launch, developing your business plan, getting your finances in order or something else entirely.
For people launching a new idea or moving from the planning stage to trading, one-to-one Start-Up support provides the structure and know-how to move forward with confidence.
When Andrew Cowan of Capoeira4Scotland first came to Just Enterprise after the pandemic, he needed to secure funding and set clear impact goals. With tailored guidance, the organisation was able to grow from a one-person idea into a social enterprise delivering inclusive physical activity sessions for children, young people and families. “Just Enterprise helped us set up, access funding, and grow from a one-person idea to a full-time social enterprise reaching marginalised communities across Glasgow,” he says. More established organisations can use our Business Support offering to strengthen operations, diversify income and increase resilience. This might involve developing a new strategy, improving governance, preparing for contracts, or finding ways to reduce reliance on grants.
For Portsoy Community Enterprise, which runs two historic harbour venues, a single planning session helped to set them on a new path. As Trustee Richard Thorne explains, “That one conversation led to real change. Both the Boat Shed and the Sail Loft are now doing really, really well. It’s been the salvation of one, if not two, of our projects.” (Read more of their story here.)
For leaders, one-to-one support can be transformational. It is about building the skills and strategic vision to guide organisations through change while staying true to their mission. Lauren Burke, Chief Executive of Greener Kirkcaldy, first engaged with Just Enterprise through the Aspiring Leaders programme and later returned for tailored advice on developing the organisation’s social enterprise bike shop. “The business planning guidance we received has been instrumental in making it sustainable,” she says. “Staff feel more empowered and the organisation is stronger and more agile.” (Read more of her story here.)
Expertise that Understands the Sector
One of the programme’s greatest strengths is the quality of our advisers. They are people who understand the pressures of running an impact-led organisation because they have worked in that world themselves. This means they can combine technical expertise with an understanding of what will work in practice for a social enterprise.
Clients often describe their adviser as feeling like “an extra team member” who is invested in their success. The support is relationship-based, practical and focused on action as well as planning, so organisations leave not just with ideas but with the confidence and tools to implement them.
Why It Works
Generic business advice can overlook the complexities of trading for a social or environmental purpose. Just Enterprise advisers know how to approach business models that serve a mission, manage blended income streams, measure impact, and align with community governance. They also understand how social enterprises can complement public services, often stepping in where there are gaps.
Because the advice is designed for this context, it helps organisations make informed choices that strengthen both their purpose and their financial sustainability.
The Difference it Makes
Our recent Impact Report which looked at a 22-month period between June 2023 and March 2025 showed that the results speak for themselves:
- 38% of organisations receiving Business Support moved into a higher income bracket.
- 23% reduced their reliance on grants.
- Dozens of jobs were created or safeguarded, many in rural or disadvantaged communities.
For those just starting out:
- 90% of Start-Up clients had either incorporated or planned to do so within six months
- Their combined projected turnover doubled from £1 million to £2 million.
The benefits go beyond the numbers, however. Many organisations say the support has given them clearer strategic direction, greater confidence and renewed energy. As one client put it, “It wasn’t generic advice. It was specific, practical and relevant to how social enterprises actually work. Having someone who knew the sector inside out made such a difference.”
Reaching Every Corner of Scotland
One-to-one support is available in every local authority area, with particularly strong uptake in rural and remote communities. The programme also works closely with organisations in areas of high deprivation and with leaders from under-represented groups, ensuring that those facing the biggest barriers can still access the highest quality advice.
Building for the Future
Whether you are taking your first steps, rethinking your business model or keen to develop your leadership skills, Just Enterprise offers a proven route to greater resilience and impact. The support is tailored, practical and delivered by people who understand what it takes to run a mission-led business in Scotland.
